Back To Earth, l’ultimo album uscito a nome di Cat Stevens nel 1978, uscirà in versione Super Deluxe a fine febbraio 2020 su Cat-O-Log Records/BMG. Il cofanetto di lusso include l’album originale (rimasterizzato presso gli studi di Abbey Road) insieme a brani inediti come ‘Butterfly’ e ‘Toy Heart’ (con il chitarrista vincitore del Grammy, Eric Johnson) che all’epoca furono considerati troppo “pop” da Cat e per questo non inclusi nel disco, insieme a demo, tracce out-take e il concerto UNICEF Year Of The Child del 1979 alla Wembley Arena, l’ultima esibizione dal vivo del cantante col nome di Cat Stevens.

Nel 1978, il leggendario musicista Cat Stevens prese la decisione apparentemente scioccante di abbandonare lo stile di vita della rock star e abbandonare le scene. Tuttavia, invece di lasciare i suoi innumerevoli fan a mani vuote, scrisse il suo ultimo album “Back To Earth” come fosse un addio, lasciando a brani come “Last Love Song” e “Just Another Night” il compito di spiegare la sua decisione.

“Back To Earth” fu considerato come un capitolo ispirato che dimostrava tutta la creatività artistica di questo straordinario musicista, ricevendo recensioni entusiastiche, grazie anche alla rinnovata collaborazione con Paul Samwell-Smith, il produttore dei suoi famosi album di multi-platino Tea For The Tillerman (1970) e Teaser And The Firecat (1971), oltre che a consolidare la sua collaborazione di lunga data con il chitarrista Alun Davies.

Il tema centrale dell’album è quello della transizione che troviamo già nel titolo “Back To Earth”, che simboleggia non solo il suo abbandono di una vita sotto ai riflettori, ma anche un punto di svolta per il suo pensiero umanitario ed ecologico. In ‘New York Times’ (una canzone ispirata ad articoli letti sul celebre quotidiano) troviamo la sua opinione su una delle piaghe dell’epoca moderna, l’inquinamento atmosferico: “Cars choking your child to death/But you don’t wanna see“.

Questi sono i contenuti che costituiscono il cuore di “Back To Earth”, un album che rimane ad oggi, un lavoro incredibilmente attuale e affascinante che fotografa Yusuf/Cat Stevens in un momento chiave della sua vita.
