Prince of Failure segna una svolta significativa nel mondo creativo di Daniel Tompkins. Scritto e sviluppato nel corso di diversi anni insieme a Paul Ortiz (Chimp Spanner), l’album ripercorre un lungo processo creativo piuttosto che un singolo momento di ispirazione. I temi dell’album riflettono sulla neurodivergenza, sul “masking” (il mascheramento sociale) e sul peso psicologico di vivere in disaccordo con le aspettative altrui: temi che plasmano sia la narrazione che il suono del disco.

Oggi il duo ha condiviso “Horizon”, il primo singolo estratto dall’omonimo album di debutto, accompagnato da un nuovo video.

“‘Horizon’ cattura il momento in cui senti che tutto ti sta crollando addosso, ma qualcosa dentro di te continua a spingerti ad andare avanti. All’interno della narrazione più ampia dell’album, segna l’inizio della trasformazione: il punto in cui il protagonista è costretto a confrontarsi con il peso dei propri dubbi e delle aspettative che gravano su di lui. Avere Kristyn Hope nel brano ha aggiunto un’ulteriore dimensione emotiva; la sua voce sembra quasi una presenza guida che squarcia il caos.

In realtà è stata una delle prime canzoni che io e Paul Ortiz abbiamo scritto insieme per questo progetto circa otto anni fa, nonché una delle prime idee in cui è scattata davvero la sintonia creativa. Il video è stato prodotto da Michael Levine utilizzando Unreal Engine, con il lavoro aggiuntivo sugli effetti speciali di Richard Oakes.” – Dan Tompkins

Dal punto di vista musicale, l’album evolve le atmosfere dei precedenti lavori solisti di Daniel Tompkins verso territori più oscuri e riflessivi. Gli arrangiamenti ariosi, le texture elettroniche e il potente lavoro di chitarra di Paul Ortiz si affiancano a voci intime, registrate con microfoni ravvicinati, creando un forte senso di immediatezza senza sacrificare l’ampiezza dinamica tipica del background progressive di Tompkins e del suo lavoro con i TesseracT. Il ritmo è sostenuto, con interludi e motivi ricorrenti che rafforzano la sensazione di un arco psicologico continuo.

La decisione di pubblicare il disco con il nome Prince of Failure riflette l’identità collaborativa del progetto e lo distingue dai precedenti ruoli di Tompkins. Ciò permette all’opera di esistere secondo i propri canoni, senza riferimenti alle aspettative passate. Prince of Failure si pone ora come una partnership creativa ufficiale tra Tompkins e Ortiz: una visione condivisa con intenti a lungo termine.
